Test Details

Test Includes

Trichophyton zoophilic [Mentagrophytes], Epidermophyton floccosum, Microsporum canis, Aspergillus spp., Alternaria culvalaria spp., Scytalidium dimidiatum, Fusarium solani, Acremonium spp., Candida albicans, Candida glabrata, Candida parapsilosis, Candida krusei, Candida tropicalis, Trichophyton Rubrum, Trichosporon, Cryptococcus, Candida (Meyerozyma guilliermondii).

Use

Detection and identification of fungal nucleic acids in nail clipping and nail scraping specimens from patients with signs and symptoms of onychomycosis (nail fungal infection). Enables rapid identification of causative dermatophytes and non-dermatophyte molds to guide appropriate antifungal treatment decisions.

Limitations

Only detects nucleic acids specifically included in the panel. Can detect DNA from dead/non-viable organisms. Results should be considered in the context of the presence of clinical signs and symptoms.

Specimen Requirements

Specimen
Nail clippings (from infected areas, preferably subsurface); nail scrapings (subungual debris using curette or blade); nail shards; combined nail material (clippings + subungual debris)
Volume
At least 1 cm³ tissue or equivalent nail material; 8–10 nail shards recommended
Container
Sealed sterile container (such as urine cup). Avoid formalin, formaldehyde, or other preservatives.
Collection Instructions
Cleanse affected nail with 70% isopropyl alcohol using gauze (not cotton), allow to air dry. For distal subungual: clip abnormal nail close to proximal edge, scrape nail bed and underside of nail plate. For proximal subungual: pare overlying nail plate, obtain sample of ventral nail plate. Discard outermost debris (contains contaminants). Collect 8–10 nail shards. Place in collection container.
Stability Requirements
ConditionDuration
Room TemperatureUp to 1 week
Storage Instructions
Store and transport at room temperature ONLY. Up to 1 week at room temperature before processing. Keep in sealed container/glassine envelope. Prevent contamination and moisture exposure.
Causes for Rejection
  • Insufficient nail material
  • Improper specimen type
  • Formalin/formaldehyde/chemical preservatives used
  • Unlabeled or mislabeled specimens
  • Sample out of specimen stability window
